Deep Street Soul play 2 sets from 9.30pm
At the forefront of the global funk & soul scene & hailing from Australia, Deep Street Soul specialise in delivering hard-hitting, gritty funk.
Formed in 2006 as a Hammond led instrumental four piece, they honed their sound and craft on the burgeoning Melbourne soul scene paying homage to their hero’s from the late 60’s, in particular the sounds of the Meters and Booker & the MG’s.
A homemade recording went on to become the first of two sold out 45’s on the local Jaycee’s label. These 7-inch’s were heard by the owner of Freestyle Records (UK) and the band signed to the label in 2008.
The debut album Deep Street Soul was released in late 2009. The album itself generated press globally with stellar reviews from Europe and the US, and support from the heavy weight DJ’s on the funk & soul scene.
After adding the dynamite vocals of ‘Mighty May’ Johnston to the lineup in late 2011, Deep Street Soul broke away from their instrumental styling and again teamed up with Freestyle Records to release the highly anticipated second album “Look Out, Watch Out”. It received sensational reviews worldwide and radio play across Europe & the US. In hometown Australia the album was featured heavily on stations across the country.
The live shows saw the band expand their lineup once again, as the evolving sound called for the killer blows of a slamming horn section.
2014 was the biggest year yet for the band with a new album and explosive live show. If you like your Hammond organ dirty, your diva funky, your rhythm section tight & your horn section schooled in the ways of the JB’s, check out Deep Street Soul.
